Get into the flow

Of course you know that writing can be very hard. Sometimes you just can’t get yourself to come up with anything good. The best thing that can happen to you in such a case is that you suddenly get into a flow, a sort of writing trance. However, you can’t wait for something like that to happen. Fortunately, a flow is something you can trigger. Here is how it’s done.

Freewriting

Simply start scribbling or typing. Type anything that your mind offers you. Type or write everything down without judging the content or quality of the text. Do this for at least five minutes, without stopping. Ideally you continue doing this until your mind is totally ‘empty’. At this point you’re ready for the real work, so delete or throw away what you just wrote.

Imagine the unusual or impossible

Write about something that you usually never write about. You can make it fantastic if you like, that’s even better. Think of impossible traits and project these on existing people. Imagining that your neighbor is a witch that never eats and grows younger every day - for example – can really ‘loosen up’ the unconscious part of your brain and trigger your creativity.

Don’t try too hard

When you’re looking for that one idea that will get you going you might as well give it all up right away. Stop trying too hard and just enjoy the game. Don’t think about your destination, but use every stop that you make on the way. Be interested in every turn that you might take and then go with the flow.

    5 techniques for persuasive writing

Do you love to write? But do you also feel like you’re missing one or more important points while writing, hence creating articles or stories that lack the power to persuade a reader? Here are a couple of techniques that might help you to write lines that really make a difference.

    Explanation

Don’t just assume a reader will understand what you mean but explain exactly what you mean. Use reasonable explanations or come up with totally crazy explanations, it all works.

    Comparison

Use metaphors to make your story more vivid. Use lots of metaphors, they are the breadcrums that lead the way to your reader. Metaphors are like the smell of coffee in the morning that gets you going. Get the idea?

    Repetition

Repeat everything that is important. Repeat everything that is important and give it a twist. Repeat everything with a twist that is important yet again. Readers won’t remember everything you write at once, su use repetition.

    Simplification

Sometimes it is necessary to use generalizations and simplifications to keep your story clear. Don’t be afraid to do this, just don’t push it too far.

    Exaggeration

Make sure the grass is always ultragreen in your writings. In other words: don’t be afraid to exaggerate. You can really use your creativity in doing so and this makes writing really fun, which is ultimately what it’s all about.

      The Twilight Saga

I recently started reading the books of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer and I got hooked quite fast.

It’s not literature, but it still hit me and by the way, why should writings always have to be so called great literature? Sometimes literature seems to be nothing more than a conspiracy (on this matter you can read this blog post in Dutch: Literatuur is een samenzwering).

But back to the Twilight stories … I read book 1 – Twilight – in a couple of days and couldn’t wait to start with book 2 – New Moon – which I also finished within a week. At the moment I’m reading Eclipse, the third book in the series. This book sometimes annoys me a bit, because Bella (the main character) just keeps on acting naive. There also doesn’t really seem to be a goal in the action of all other characters. Some of them are human and watch a game on tv every evening. Others are either a vampire or a werewolf, chasing after Victoria who is always too fast and too smart and gets away time after time after time.

Bella is also a bit clueless in book three, she’s crazy about Edward, but can’t seem to make up her mind about the steps she should take. Her best friend Jacob makes stupid, even disrespectful remarks about Edward and offends, even betrays Bella by doing so, but she never really takes a stand.

My conclusion is that so far Eclipse is built on quicksand. However, I will continue to read everything about Bella and her friends, because I just don’t want to miss anything.
